SKIN CANCER FACTS

Skin cancer is the most prevalent of all types of cancer.

-One million Americans develop skin cancer each year.
-Fair skin, sun exposure, scarring, occupational exposures, and family history are risk factors.

Actinic Keratoses, pre-cancers, are often an early stage in development of skin cancer.

Basal Cell and Squamous Cell skin cancers are common, rarely deadly, but can be locally damaging to bone and nerves.

Melanoma is the most deadly of all skin cancers.
-46,000 new cases will be diagnosed and 7,700 Americans will die this year.

Best Defense against Skin Cancer - some recommendations:

-Sun Avoidance - seek shade; avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
-Cover up - wear light colored, tightly-woven clothes that cover well; wear a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses.
-Use Quality Sunscreen - at least SPF 15 and reapply often - at least every two hours. Clouds do not screen out damaging UVA and UVB rays.
-Self Examination - perform monthly self-exams of your entire body - watch for unusual marks or changes to your skin.
-Regular skin exams by a dermatology professional; annually for persons without symptoms or suspicious spots, twice yearly if you have had pre-cancers, and four times a year if you have had a skin cancer.
